Practical Steps to Communicate with Deities

I’ve spoken a lot of woo-woo ideological stuff leading up to this point but what I haven’t done is given any practical steps in opening up the line of communication with a Deity. So, in this blog post I’m going to give some examples of easier, more integrative steps to open space in your head to hear the Gods’ voices.

  1. Journaling

Journaling is an excellent way to talk to your Gods, pray, and even do shadow work. Exploring your inner voice is just as important as finding other voices in your head. The more work you do acknowledging your own mind and creativity, the easier it will be to be more aware of who it is that is speaking to you and who you are in your own head.

This can either be a physical journal or a notes app on your phone or both. I personally find physical journals easier to use with things like devotional journaling where I am just talking to Loki. The phone notes apps are easier to use for documentation like writing down experiences as they happen along with timestamps and dates as well as using them for divination.

Having timestamps can assist in cross-referencing and referring back to situations that have happened in the past to what they mean now. I make a regular point to look back through journals and spot the differences and similarities in how Loki communicated with me. Sometimes I find really poignant moments of things I’ve since forgotten about that He has later mentioned to me which can easily be a reassurance of who I am talking to.

Using phone apps can also be helpful for divination because it can guide your hand for more stream of consciousness writing as it is faster. I have an excessive amount of notes that are organized by what kind of divination I am doing whether it is dream interpretation, tarot reading, channeling, and other sorts of experiences and how I interpret them. With divination, you can more easily relate different cards with different analogies that the Deity is using and cross reference them. However, make sure that you come up with your own meaning before you reference other things like guidebooks and online resources. You want to come up with your own context before finding others in communicating with the Gods.

And lastly, journaling is useful for automatic writing. Coming up with a question, going into trance, and then writing everything that you hear down no matter how weird and nonsensical it is is a straight shot to finding the Gods’ voices. I have written more about that here.

  1. Physical Activity

I don’t mean for you to go train to become a weightlifter or lose weight. Clearing your head is not the only way to listen for the Gods. Properly engaging with your body and doing activities that are mindful and allowing physical responses to come to you while engaging with it can make it much easier for you to be aware of what you’re listening to and for.

The main activities I recommend if you are able is walking, yoga, simple stretches, hiking, biking, and other things that get your mind back into your body. The more you hone in with yourself, the easier it will be for Them to reach you. Also, inviting Them on long drives and long points in time where you are doing a more mindless task is an opportunity to be more mindful. I also find cleaning to be beneficial when it comes to communicating.

If you are disabled, I would recommend doing whatever makes you feel most comfortable in your body in order to take your mind off of the everyday and focus on being mindful and present. This looks differently for everyone.

  1. Intentional Divination

Most of the time, tarot and oracle cards are going to be beneficial for aiding in your discernment. What I mean by “intentional” is by defining the answer you get first through your own meaning and by the meaning that you think is what They are pointing to. And then, once you have that written down, use a pendulum to ask if that was correct. Do not use a pendulum before interpreting it yourself and do not use a book to decipher the meaning first.

It is most important that you do this without receiving guidance from a third party or source.

If you need some additional assistance from others, only do so if you are unable to focus – do not use it as a crutch.

  1. Building a Shrine

I sound like I’m beating a dead horse at this point but really, what it comes down to is manifestation and how willing the Deity is to be present where you are.

Building a shrine and providing anchors for the Deity you’re wanting to contact is important to helping you become more aware of Their energy and presence before you open up lines of communication with Them.

They will come to you just as you will to Them. I have spoken more about my recommended process in a few blog posts but to drive the point home – a shrine is the path for the Deity into your home and living situation. They need it to become more clear and focused for you. Otherwise, it can become blurry and not noticeable. Creating a shrine and maintaining it is key to the beginning and continuation of any Deity relationship.

This list is by no means comprehensive, there are several other factors that play into consistency and communication with the Divine being of your choice.

You also want to make sure that who you are contacting wants to contact you first. This will often look like an unshakable pull to reach Them and They will send signs (that you hopefully don’t gaslight yourself into believing are not real). Make offerings consistently and maintain balance energetically in your life and you’ll be golden.

This is extremely reductive for an extremely nuanced topic but this format seems to be more helpful for people so I’m going to keep making posts like this going forward and referring to my more complex guidance elsewhere.
